The Day Higher Education Showed Itself an Ignoramus In Its Display of Disdain for Common Hospitality

12-year old Fifi and I were on the treadmills at the gym this afternoon when Iranian President Ahmadinejad made his controversial appearance at Columbia University. First we watched the dean of the university introduce the president of the university, who was in turn, charged with introducing Ahmadinejad. That's when I almost tripped over my jaw. So did Fifi. Mr. Bollinger, if your conduct is indicative of a life spent pursuing higher education, you can keep it--I don't want it!

It is not my place to say who is what, and what he meant, and why they did, and what they do or don't have over there. I am relishing the Truth tonight that my place is really to serve my husband and teach my daughters how to be keepers at home, and how to love their husbands and children--and it is more than enough to keep me under contract for another 20 years.

So I'll say this: Daughters, be very careful who you invite into your life and especially into the sanctity of your home. Check your motivation against the wisdom of God's Word. And when you do choose to extend an invitation--to friend or foe--you must treat them hospitably.

If you have a difficult topic or touchy subject you want to discuss--say, like: terrorism, human rights or nuclear capabilities--you must do it by mutual consent. Please don't invite your nemesis over under the guise of friendship or the "free exchange of ideas" and then insult and humiliate her with a scathing narrative in front of an audience, before she has so much as opened her mouth!

And if you don't get along with her in the first place because you suspect she is unstable, a liar, impulsive or otherwise dangerous--do not fan the flame! Do not fuel the fire!

Because manipulating a situation to humiliate an unreasonable person just. isn't. going. to end well--for any of us.

Yep. It was abit shocking. I mean, on one hand I was relieved he didn't stand up there and trumpet the *ahem* gentleman's good pints (like there were any), but on the other hand, it was a rather rude thing to do.

Especially after they've spent the past week or so defending their decision to have him speak under "free speech" and "the spirit of open discussion".

Yeah.

Right.

Frankly, though, I'm just plain disgusted with the whole concept of him even being on American soil.

And with that, I'll keep the rest of my thoughts to myself.

I was looking forward to your response. I think the dean said what he did to show the world that the university "didn't agree" with Ahmidinejad's views. Personally, that little speech did not impress me. And, you are right, you do not invite someone and then insult them. Although I feel that the guest was expecting it, even though he acted shocked. The man should not have been invited in the first place. We are just enabling their propaganda. ROTC and other conservatives have been treated far worse on the same campus. ROTC is not even allowed to have a detachment. Hmmm...equal opportunity for free speech? I would guess that you and your homeschool group would not be welcomed with open arms.Nor would I. Christians never seem to receive such invitations.
Great post!

In my news-less world, I don't know what you are talking about. I mean I DO, but I don't know the specifics so I am off to find out.

But in any case, I so agree that we must check our motives against God's Word, even in those "good" things we do.

The only word right for Ahmadinejad is psychopath. He shouldn't be given the stage to speak; instead he should be behind bars.

The whole situation should really wake us all up.
I watched the speech today at the UN and it was basically a call to war against us.

It is sad that we would allow him any type of platform in our country while his country is hurting our kids over there.

Arrggghhh.
