Links: Something Sour, Something Sweet

I watched a very disturbing video over at Molly Coddled's place this evening. If you have a daughter, you must watch and educate yourself before you make this decision for her that could have devastating consequences.

The interview is about the Gardasil vaccination. We have not, and will not subject our girls to this vaccine. We will educate them about the spiritual, emotional and physical repercussions of relations before marriage, instead--including HPV and cervical cancer.

Did I ever tell you about the conversation I had with my ob/gyn about the subject? He tried to convince me of the importance of the vaccine. I tried to give him a peek into our lifestyle.

The conversation went something like this:
"We're recommending it for girls starting at 12, because some may become active as young as that."

"Well, not mine, thank you."

"Ha. You can't be with them all the time."

"Uh. Yes, I can. And yes I am."

"Well, someday they're going to go out on a date. You'll want to protect them in case of a date r@pe."

"What? Ahem. My girls won't be dating. We don't look at romance as a recreational activity."

"Well then, any kind of r@pe. You'll want to protect them against any kind of r@pe."
Really? Well. That was a strange conversation, to say the least. So maybe a medical degree and fantastic surgical skill don't do anything for your ability to reason.

Or maybe he'd just spent the weekend at a Merck convention in the Bahamas. I don't know.

Anyway, mothers of daughters, please click over and watch the 9-minute interview here.

Oh wait!

And when you're done, come back for dessert--see something entirely different over at Granny's that is sure to make you laugh out loud!

WOW!!! I'm horrified!! Thank you so much for bringing this my attention, I really had no idea. I will definitely NOT be letting my child get this vaccine. I'm so grateful to have this information.

As long as we stay here, thankfully I don't have to worry about this pressure (UK meds don't believe there is a vaccine for chicken pox so this is way off the mark for them). As far as dessert, THANK YOU! I needed that laugh today. Seriously needed it.

Yes, I find that whole vaccine issue odd.
Thankfully, my midwife does not *push* it, as your doctor seems to.

My husband and I made a the decision to completely avoid this vaccination when it first came out. We've just always known that it was a fear based and fear given shot.

I totally agree with you about the vaccanation. This was a very good post. I hope a lot of mothers who have daughters get a chance to read it. I only had one daughter and she is married with two children of her own. thanks for sharing this. connie from Texas

When they first started advertising for it I was so angry. All they show is girls jumping rope and playing outside saying,"One Less. One Less." They never mention HOW you get this. NEVER do they say that. My daughter will not get this vaccine. I am so glad you brought this up. And the doctor's explanation- HA! A vaccine is supposed to protect them from r@pe? What? That's absurd. And how would you tell your daughter THAT?

Hey,

You asked me if I read Isaiah, and I haven't, so I wanted to ask you what it's about...

I'm a couple days late on this one, but I have a question... my daughter is only 4 right now, so for all I know this vaccine will be mandatory by the time she reaches junior high or something, but anyway... My mom is in the health care profession, consequently, she has been fed all the reasons why this is necessary. Her argument is that everyone should get it because even if you have saved yourself for marriage, you can't be sure that your spouse has and you could get HPV from them. Any thoughts on that? I wasn't sure how to refute her argument. She kind of has a point, I mean just because you are marrying a Christian man doesn't mean that he never stumbled.

Absolutely, Courtney! Good point. My understanding is that 12 is the age to get the vaccination not for life-long effectiveness, but because that's the age that children are suspect for sexual activity. Eeek! That should concern us on so many levels, but instead we just give them a vaccine to keep them from some of the consequences.

Anyway, my thought is--when she's old enough to marry, she's old enough to make this choice for herself. She and her husband will make lots of choices for themselves.

But in the meantime, we make choices as her parents so that we might stand before the Lord on that day, in good conscience, having been obedient to Him in all we knew to do.

She won't be ignorant to it.

And let's not forget that cervical dysplasia (the precursor to cancer)--the Lord forbid and the Lord willing--is detectable through yearly exams. And treatable.
