It's not really our news. It's Fifi's news. But no way am I waking her to share it because she'll be awake all night -- for sure.
We have been expecting this news for days. I've been
See...
Our little girl has wanted to play the violin since she was 3 years old. Back then, she spent a couple of years pretending to play with a miniature mop and broom for an instrument and bow.
Once, during a Sunday night "hymn sing" at a little Baptist church down the street -- which was not our own -- Fifi introduced herself to the preacher after the service. He had a big ole' guitar strapped around his torso, and so she went up to him -- musician to musician -- and told him that she played the violin. I winked over her shoulder to say that she was speaking about her imaginary violin.
He smiled and invited her to bring it with her the next time she came.
And so she did. Because little children have memories like elephants that way.
It was a precious moment when Preacher invited 4-year old Fifi to come up and play a duet with him. He wasn't blind. He could see that her violin was really a child's plastic housekeeping toy. But maybe he could also see the bigger picture. And perhaps he could hear the Savior whispering, "Suffer not..."
I can't remember what they "played," but I do remember that I will never forget Preacher for his kindness to my girl. With that small sacrificial gesture before his congregation of about a-dozen-or-so folks, he validated her dream. And I'm convinced he inspired her to keep dreaming.
We stopped by his house on the way home from lessons one day last summer. I wanted him to hear what she could do now. I wanted him to know that I was grateful. Too often, we don't let people know the impact they've had on us. We worry about feeling strange or looking silly.
Life's too short.
As it turns out, these past years have brought change for all of us. Preacher is retired now. He cares for his wife who had a stroke last year and lives in a wheelchair. But he still straps that guitar on, smiles big and plays with the church band.
He's still making the least of us feel welcome and useful in The Kingdom.
But back to my story...
6 years later, Fifi has studied with 3 different teachers. And because she home-schools, and because we weren't willing to give up Sunday afternoons for the local youth orchestra rehearsals, Fifi has diligently spent all that time -- summer and semester alike -- practicing. Practicing for the next lesson, the occasional recital -- and not much more.
Great things have been accomplished in those 6 years. Fifi has developed great discipline by being a musician. She has benefited from the ear-training that the Suzuki method affords. She has found an outlet to express herself...and to praise her Creator.
Fifi is not a music phenom.
But apparently she is a hard enough worker and good enough musician to be awarded a place with the 2nd violins in the senior-level orchestra she auditioned for Monday night. They liked her! They really liked her!
Without much idea as to how she stacked up, musically, to other home-schooling musicians, we kinda, sorta hoped she might get a high chair placement on the intermediate level. We are a little unnerved, a bit surprised, and a whole lot excited for her!
It's going to be a great year!

Congratulations Fifi! That is an awesome accomplishment!
I am so thrilled for her! Good for her for working so hard and being so dedicated!
And I also loved the sweet story about the man who encouraged her...what a wonderful lesson!
How absolutely excting for you all. To God be the glory.
I'm in tears. I wish I could see her face when you tell her.
What an awesome man to take the moment and for you to go back years later to say thank you.
Fifi, congratulations sweetie. Your discipline and hard work has paid off. God has rewarded you, enjoy.
Way to go, girl!! And I LOVE the story about the preacher--we really don't know who might be watching....
:-D
Congratulations to Fifi! How exciting and how wonderful that the Baptist preacher was so kind to a sweet 4 year old.
FABULOUS!! Can you capture her face when you tell her?
I love Friday's post so much.
How exciting! I am sure your morning was especially special when she got the news:)
COngrats to Fifi!!!
That Preacher brings tears to my eyes- what love. I have met few people like that in my life, and will never forget them. :>)
Congratulations to Fifi! How exciting! God bless that preacher for validating her dream - and her parents for helping her to pursue it.
Capturing her face would have been great, but all the camera batteries were dead, dead, dead this morning!
So...how to tell her?
I thought it would be fun to let her read the post. There was a little gasp. And a big hug for Mom.
Fifi gives good reaction -- very quiet but clearly moved. You can see one (not this one) by checking out the Youtube clip at the bottom of one of my favorite posts here: http://restoringtheyears.blogspot.com/2006/07/twos-company-threesgratitude.html
Congratulations Fifi, well done!
God Bless.
What an accomplishment for her - I can only imagine how thrilled you all are. The story about the preacher and imaginary violin made me smile. I picture him in my mind as Father Tim in the Mitford series I'm reading right now. Kind, caring and very, very wise.
What wonderful news. Congratulations to her and to everyone who encouraged her!
And may I just say,I love your most recent Thursday Thirteen.
Amen and amen!
Even the musical phenoms have to exercise discipline and have to always strive to be better.
Keep practicing for the heavenly praise band, Fifi!
I'm coming back here to say I happened to scroll down just now and see Dumpling play that beautiful duet! She did a wonderful job!
My seven yr old has not been taking lessons, but we need to do this since she likes to pick out chords on her own. She can't read music yet, and this inspired me to hurry up with this!
Please Dumpling she played beautifully! :D
I love your blog site and love coming to read what you have to say. You sound like you have a great musician in your daughter. I homeschooled my children too and now they are raising their children in the Lord and it brings great joy to my heart to see them love the Lord! May God continue to bless you and your family! If you have any tips for me as I start my blog site I would welcome them!
