First thing this morning, we awoke to a beautiful

day in the costal pines of central California. The Lodge in which we stayed boasts manicured flower gardens, water fountains and a vegetable patch that envelope a long and winding walking trail. I think the time spent at the Lodge was Husband's favorite of the whole vacation -- he's found a new destination for us when we go "home" to Southern Cal.

The main street of the village is quaint and a haven for locals and city-weary tourists alike. Thanks to Husband's need for a coffee "fix," we all found ourselves in a soda shoppe where he "medicated" himself with a cup of "joe," and the rest of us enjoyed chocolate malts, biscotti and the open conversation of the old men

who welcomed one another and congregated around the large circular tables.
After an hour of window shopping, we returned home to Santa Barbara from our Hearst Castle day trip via Moonstone Beach. There were tide pools and rock formations to explore, and driftwood and polished stones in every shape and many colors to collect.

Usually, as the mom, I stay above or outside the activity so as to be ready to keep order, but the serenity of the beach and the interesting rocks that could be found 5-7 inches deep, and well into the shoreline drew me. Before I knew it, I was seated legs outstretched with a careless abandon of my need for quick mobility. I could have stayed there all day and let my usual twisted-up-tight, protective self just relax and trust the Lord that the children would have enough sense to stay out of the freezing cold water. They did, and we had a great time.
