California Vacation: Hearst Castle Tour

Today we traveled 2 hours north to San Simeon and nearby Cambridge to attend the night tour at Hearst's Castle. In the spring and fall, living history actors come dressed in period costume and roam the grounds much as Hearst's guest would have during the home's 1930's heyday. The grounds were incredible, the home was a maze of rooms and stairwells, and the view was simply astonishing. "Castle" is appropriate as the hilltop location overlooking what was private land as far as the eye can see really does seem like a kingdom.

After the tour, we all went back to our suite at the Cambria Pines Lodge where 4 of 5 of us who were awake had a pizza party by the fireplace. A humble end to a long but wonderful day full of interesting things to see and learn. Oh yes, there was also the peppermints we brought from State Street's See's Candy Shop. Dumpling found them very entertaining--which is to say she enjoyed smearing them all over her mouth like lipstick--and of course, whatever entertains Dumpling never fails to entertain the rest of us too!
