This is our 11th year living in South Texas. And every year sometime in mid-October when everyone else is talking about fall and folliage, my gentle husband comes home and plops himself on the chair to announce, "I hate this."
He's irritated because we're still running the a/c, the mosquitoes are still biting and it's 90 degrees outside.
I tell him to wait. Just wait for it. Soon enough, we'll remember why we endure this all summer long. This morning, it happened...

It's in the 70s, Fifi's finishing her vocabulary and math to the soft strains of Segovia's guitar and the little girls are...just being. Together. Outside. Happily. Imaginatively. Blessedly. I'm thinking there is a picnic in our immediate future.

Oooh, I'm jealous! But happy for you :) Enjoy it while it lasts!
Don't you just love October in Texas?? It's impossible to be in a bad mood in October. In Texas. :-)
(Fifi's hair is gorgeous)
Ah, yes, I know the refrain well. And in December, when the breeze is just right, the temperature is 78, and my kids and I are walking around in short sleeve shirts, I can almost forget the fact that we were still sweltering in October when many of our countrymen were enjoying the fall foliage. Of course, a crisp Christmas might be a nice change of pace.
Your weather sounds lovely. We should be down to the 70's this weekend. Here's hoping that we get to wear sweaters and jeans come Christmas!
Good photography! And that Fifi just gets prettier every day.
It was cool here this morning too. We possibly got a little too excited and put on long sleeves only to burn up and change a few hours later. We're ready for it too!
Different strokes, I guess. It's 60 here right now and going down to about 40 tonight. Just the right temperature for sleeping - which is what I'll be doing in about an hour!
Ahhhhhh. I can't wait until we can actually bundle up. :)
I am glad it's cooling off for you - we've had such a lovely October in Colorado. I love it.
I am commenting on your previous post - I have had to go private, as you know, so will not be having drop-on visitors or making new friends that way. But I am thankful to be able to still keep in touch with those who care - I cannot overstate the importance of the friendship and prayers of these friends I have never met and may never meet - except I have met 5 blog friends and what a delightful time it has been! I treasure your honesty and brilliant mind. And your pictures.
I feel your husbands pain! We moved to Southeast Oklahoma 4 years ago in November and the following fall the temperature stayed in the 80's clear up until Thanksgiving!!! I LOVE fall-but not that kind of fall! ;) I am from the Northwest and I really miss the climate!
I'm so often reminded that the Lord has a sense of humor. Why else would He have arranged for an autumn-loving, crisp, cool air sniffing, apple cider sipping kinda' girl to live in Hawaii for a few years. Who knows where our next post will take us. But, you can bet I'm praying for someplace with SEASONS. (Oh, and Dear Lord, if it isn't too much to ask, could it be someplae with snow?)
Oh how I miss autumn in your city! Someday, maybe, someday. It is cool here (sweater weather) and should be wet for the weekend so no riding the bikes through the leaves on the streets.
Wednesday it was 80. Friday it was 60. Just overnight it changed, and now I'm complaining about being cold, when I was just complaining about being hot. I SO need to be content in whatever circumstance.
What a lovely day.
I agree with aswewalk. We went from summer to freezing with hardly a day in the 70's! I'm freezing and complaining. Contentment? Not yet....
