Who Can Know the Mind of a 12 Year Old?

This afternoon, I gave Fifi the "heads-up" that our pastor had been speaking to me about how much he appreciates the violin, and thinks that it makes such a worshipful sound, to which I assured him that with our new teacher, Fifi would be ready to play the offeratory or even the Lord's Table this year. Fifi dreamily wondered aloud, "Maybe I could play on the Sunday before April 15th, which is actually on a Tuesday this year..."

Husband and I asked, "Why...why...what does that matter?"

But before we could finish our thought, she replied, "...I'd like to play Nearer My God To Thee."

Now, who knows Fifi well enough at this point to get where she was going with that?

Two hints:

(1) It made us laugh so hard!

(2) We thought about bringing a few buckets of water to church that day--for effect.

The date the Titanic sank... "Nearer My God to Thee" was the last song the band played--no Googling even necessary! Ha. ;)

Well, Fifi doesn't pay taxes. ;) There's big hints at this post:

and this post:

(Anyone know how to put nice, clean links in the comments? Not me! I'll be forever in your debt if you'd tell me how.)

Ah, Ashleigh was homeschooled too.

Lol--yep. ;) And when I was Fifi's age, Zach and I were watching the A&E Titanic documentary over and over and over again--that was our entertainment. Not obvious that we're homeschoolers, is it? ;)

Well I had no guess and wasn't going to comment...until I saw your request for how to put links in comments. And it's on the house. No debt to repay. Your visits and comments on my blog are more than enough.

I was going to post the code here but you wouldn't see the code but instead you'd just see the link. So, follow the link to find the html code to insert in comments. You simply replace the parts between the quotation marks. Let me know if you have any questions.

Gotta make sure those buckets are holding ICE water!

Ok, that is hilarious! I often remark that I'm not sure what we used to laugh at before having kids...they sure do give you fresh reasons every day!

See? I studied Titanic with my 3rd graders every year--in PUBLIC SCHOOL. We didn't focus so much on what song they were playing. I do remember that they played.
We always showed the National Geographic special when Robert Ballard found the wreckage of the ship. It was a GREAT documentary except when he found it--he said one of the biggest cuss words in the world. Every year I would mute the tv and talk over that part or "accidentally" hit fast forward until I was sure the offending word was over. Another teacher showed it one year and I warned her but she looked up too late--went running down the aisle--reached for the TV--and %#^($#&!!#%
One little girl on the front row gasped and crossed herself.
She apologized to the class and they were very understanding. Poor teacher--I never think of Titanic that I don't think of that. See? Public school vs. Homeschool Titanic study!

All I have to ask is that you let us know how it goes this spring if Fifi does indeed play "Nearer My God To Thee". I'm sure she'll be a rousing success. And I think Brenda's Titanic story is sad yet funny at the same time. Those poor children! That poor teacher!

I am so glad someone explained. I couldn't make the connection. I do remember the song they played, but I never would have remembered the date.

I remember watching the movie as a kid and being very moved as they sang the song as the ship sank. I cried.

Ah. Like everyone else, I couldn't put it together.

All I thought was ta day, and yes, we feel like we need to be as close to our Jesus on that day.

But a young girl wouldn't know that. lol. So it didn't make sense.

Glad some people explained it. :)

I guessed the Titanic as well. And now I am officially not a "lurker" :) And I can't wait to hear her play in church! No ice water on my side though, please.

I wasn't getting it at first, but only because I just woke up and had just two sips of my coffee...;)I SO know all about them playing that as the ship was sinking...it actually always moved me thinking about it.

But too funny that this was how Fifi's mind was working...and such a smart girl!
