Reverent Beauty

I just caught the tail-end of the PBS program, Classical Destinations. Today, they were in Leipzig, Germany talking about Bach and other Great Masters that come from there. Bach is first up in my music player tonight.

As I watch and listen, my heart swells with emotion for the incredible beauty that has been born in that spot in the form of music. Such reverent music. It stops me where I am and holds my breath.

As I watch the tour, I think I might like to go there someday, more than anywhere else on Earth.

And...I think I had better not go there, because if I do, I may not return.

GB, Do you have any advice about how to cultivate a taste for good music? I like classical (yes, I know that's probably not the right word) music but I don't know where to start, how to learn, etc. Also for my children... Do you have any recommendations? IF you have the time and inclination of course. I know you're careful about dispensing advice so only if you're comfortable with it. Thank you.

Sara...speaking as one amateur to another (for lack of better term) my advice would be to simply live with it. Easy, really. Try fasting from ALL the music of this day (as far as it is within your control to do so) and saturate yourself and your home with another diet entirely.

Start looking in the bargain bins at drug stores or music stores for really inexpensive discs. (Sometimes $3 or $4!) I think my love for classical music was reignited when, after birthing Fifi, the hospital sent me home with a gift bag that included a "Smart Symphony" cd of great pieces by the great composers. You might check them out, second-hand and cheap, cheap, cheap! over here:
