Dumpling! Get off your toes!

Somewhere around the millionth time I said that, I think I lost the "please," at the end. But Dumpling being the resilient peace-maker that she is, just smiles her coy smile and immediately gets 3 inches shorter. If I had a nickel for every time I said it in the past half year, we'd be living the independent life on acreage in the Hill Country.

Or, maybe in an historic home downtown, actually. But clearly, we'd still be dealing with the reality that "toe-walking" as the orthopedist so clinically diagnosed it, has its consequences. It's not just cute.

I remember back 18 months or so, asking Dumpling why she did that, "Are you trying to be taller?" She explained that she just liked to pretend to be wearing high heels. I thought that was strange because she's not seeing that modeled by anyone 'round here! I'm way too over myself to be dealin' with heels. But, anyway...

About 6 months ago, we four girls were at the orthopedist for something else entirely when the woman said she'd like to scan the sisters as long as they were there. Neither had the problem that the doctor was looking for--(Am I being cryptic enough? See me protecting the privacy of my girls?)--but she did notice that Dumpling has a very short and tight Achilles Heel, and that's not good.

We took her home to nag and exercise it ourselves, but then...

Sometime in the 10-day stupor between our vacation and Christmas, I had to take Dumpling to the prosthetics supply dealer to have her fitted for braces.

First, the protective stocking. Don't be too jovial, Mr. Technician. Dumpling doesn't need much to assume that now you're...engaged.

At some point while she was being plastered, Dumpling--student of the Ancients this year--shouted, "Look Mommy! I'm being mummified!"

Enjoying the joke together.

She's thinking that he's been staring at her foot for a really long time now, but actually he's holding her in a flexed position to make the cast.

Now he's cutting it off. With a blade! Such trust. Imagine my shock when afterward I found a 2-inch gash in her leg, right down the middle!

She quickly assured me that her cat did that. Mr. Technician quickly concurred.

The braces are removable, and not near so ugly as Forrest Gump's. They are short, plastic, and will keep her off her toes so that her heel may stretch and lengthen. She might even get to keep what remains of her collapsing arch in the bargain. And I know she liked picking the design herself: cream with pastel butterflies. Understated amongst all the neon and themes; that's my girl.

Don't fret for her though. Not yet. She's quite excited, in fact. And so is her little sister, who, on the day of the fitting, began walking on her toes.

Uh....no, Cuddlebug. You've got a different kind of braces in your future with your man-made, super-dee-duper overbite. Now get that thumb out of your mouth! You've reached your quota! (Those teeth? Mine. My fault. My genes. Sorry, Baby.)

Anyway...

Dumpling gets her leg braces tomorrow. If the Lord brings her to mind, would you pray for her? She's very excited, and as a homeschooler, she doesn't have an inkling that braces aren't just g-r-e-a-t! But I've been warned that she might be a little sore, and I know this is likely to put a crimp in her twirl. And that girl sure does like to twirl.

Praying for Dumpling, that she does not experience much soreness, and that her twirling isn't crimped. :)

P.S. I was reading this post slowly, I guess, because I gasped when I read Dumpling had a cut in her leg after the Dr. cut off the cast... then I read on. :) I need some sleep!

Absolutely! And somehow I sense she will overcome the twirling issue rather quickly. she seems rather resilient :)

Bless her little heart, I love the twirling picture!! I have a twirler too, so I totally understand the slight twinge of them getting in the way. Side note: isn't it just another wonderful reminder why you homeschool, having one less worry about her being teased to death over the stinking things?

Praying!

Two of our kids have worn braces: one with neon lightening bolts, one with race cars!

Make sure you find out from the ortho what her wearing schedule should be. Our experience was that they wanted the kids to ease into full-time wear to minimize soreness (there will be some -- Advil, anyone?) and to help with adaptation with every brace (position) change.

Oh, and the spinning? She might be slowed a little at first, but those little spinners are born to spin! You'll be amazed!

We are this close () to following in Dumplings footsteps. They are giving my Princess a couple more months of exercising.

Who did you go to?

Praying all goes well!

yep, praying.

I have a cousin, now sixteen and walking flat on her feet, who used to drive us crazy with her toe walking.

I cant tell you how much fun I had reading this - I went through orthopaedic shoes when I was in grade school - didnt see it nearly as funny as she does. And may I just say I also loved, loved the bookshelf photo - love anyone else who has shelves full to overbrimming. xoxo

Praying for her today.

I think her attitude about the whole thing is a blessing. And, I had a student whose parents opted not to do anything about his toe walking and they really probably should have.
I will say a prayer for her.

If it's not one thing....it's another! The life of a Mom is not easy! But you are putting so much fun into each trial....what a great thing to do.

Each of our three children had braces...and I decided to get them at age 40. I have two suggestions....Advil and Chocolate malts! Of course, the advil must be Doctor affirmed...but those chocolate malts....oh those chocolate malts!

One word of warning...it's probably not a good idea to twirl after consuming a chocolate malt! Although I'm sure your digital camera could capture that too! Put it on Sports mode!

It was fun to see such joy.....in your post.

Blessings!

Oh, Dumpling. Hearts can twirl! Minds can twirl! Embrace the books, soak in the music. I will be praying for you during this time- you are too precious!

How fun that he's so obviously getting such a kick out of her. Love her attitude. I'll bet this doesn't slow her down one bit.

I'm sure she'll be spinning again in no time.

Thanks for coming to visit me yesterday. I wanted to return the visit, and I think I might just stick around for a bit. :)

And who says home schooling produces insecure children? How lovely that she is secure in the love of her family - that come what may can be taken with a smile!!

Our prayers are with her! Blessings to you,

Oh my, I am so glad I "found" you again! I have missed dropping by your blog, but couldn't for the life of me remember my way back! I've added you to my bloglines now, so I guess you're stuck with me, lol!

I had braces (complete with headgear, yipes!) as a girl... honestly, at my school they were quite the status symbol. Something about that tin grin I guess:-#

Wow...I read this with my mouth hanging open because Brianna, 6, toe walks. "Off your toes" is heard constantly and has been since she was 2-3ish. The Drs keep assuring me it's not a big deal!!! (military drs) Okay...she's going back in. I am so glad that Dumpling has pretty little "cinderella" shoes :) Beautiful beautiful little princess.

Thanks for stopping by. Yes, I took a break for sometime. Life got a bit crazy for this Texas Gal. Then a few friends began blogging and made me jealous for the blogosphere!!

I will say a prayer for your little girl! But so glad that she does have such a great attitude about it all...that must help so much!

(My oldest will most likely be getting the mouth kind of braces like Cuddlebug...thanks for the reminder...I'm suppose to make that consultation appt. this year!) ;)

But all of your daughters are so beautiful!
Blessings!

Aw, sweet Dumpling! How is she doing with the braces now? I'm glad I didn't take a camera with me for Rachel's fitting for her back brace . . . her response was very different from Dumpling's. Maybe she'll be more positive at the next visit when she sees her butterfly prints all over the brace . . . I hope. :0)
