Hiding His Word In Our Hearts

I've cleaned up my sidebar a bit.

Moved are the video clips of the girls reciting their Bible memory passages. They are all relocated to a new blog space dedicated to the purpose. It's link will be in my sidebar, along with our current project and the system we try to be faithful to employ in our efforts.

Can I say something here? For some, this is going to be preaching to the choir, but for others who read here, perhaps it's a new thought. So here it goes:

You know, I don't post those clips to show you what my kids can do; I post those clips to show you what your kids can do! How very sad it is that Sunday School teachers, VBS leaders, and parents today have such low expectations of how much Scripture a small child can take in and retain.

If they have any expectations at all.

And even more tragic is the flippant way folks today treat the very idea of Bible memorization. Somehow in this age of compromise in which a child's mind, soul and spirit are allowed to absorb and become subtly infused with bitter, angst-ridden music lyrics and magic-spell mantras, Christian parents in America have neglected to recognize and redeem their children's remarkable ability to be influenced and to remember.

I don't think it's always been this way--not with the way the hymn writers Fanny Crosby and Francis Ridley Havergal used to memorize whole books of the Bible. At least.

Is there anything--anything at all--more worthy of our moments, our efforts or our brain space than the life-giving Word of God?

Of course there isn't.

Good stuff! My girls love to memorize Scripture--but are never asked to at church. I'm thrilled everytime they recite a new verse to me. One of the current reasons I am loving home education.

My almost three year old and I started using the same system that you use after we read of it here. I'm not claiming he understands much of what we memorize but I hope that one day, when he is able to understand, he will be able to draw from a vast storehouse in his mind.

Now I have to admit that I need to be much more regular about using the systm because it really does work. (I'm sure many other methods would work too - I'm just saying.)

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and practices regarding this subject - you have helped me a great deal.

Ah...you hit me with some conviction there!!

When my daughter was VERY young, we taught her a few verses and she went around quoting them often. Now that she's a bit older, for whatever reason I've completely stopped having her memorize anything!! Thanks for a great reminder.

Wonderful post, as usual. You're right. Given all of the other junk our kids asbsorb, it's important that they hide the word in their hearts. Thanks again for provoking us not only to think, but to act.

I need to start working with the grands on memorization. They are so smart and they need to use those good brains for something important.

That what those clips taught me...how much my kids could do. Being that Sweetheart is just a year older than Dumpling, it really struck me what she could be doing.

We have started using the system, but I need to get it set up better. I really appreciated your explanation of it, I had never heard of it before.

Thanks for your encouragement over at my blog!

I woke up a little bit ago with a heavy feeling regarding how much more scripture I want to teach my children. It was so heavy.... and I promise the very next thing I read on my computer was this post.

Wow, God! He works in such beautiful ways...

Loved the video blogs and your purpose for them. I will never forget the moment my girls receited Psalm 100 after we read it daily for 2 weeks. I about hit the floor - wish I could still memorize like that.

Thanks for the encouragement to keep them in the word with high expectations.

I LOVE it...even the smallest of children can memorize scripture...if they can make a sentence...they can learn scripture. Some think I'm nuts, but I just think it is plain Biblical:)
