Works For Me Wednesday: Timeline

This doesn't have to be for homeschoolers only; we would do well to remember and discuss our history with our children. I've tried the notebook timelines with my (now) 6th grader...and the "Book of the Centuries" too.

Frankly, she and I both needed our history information to be more at the ready. Visible. Easily available.

So, I purchased and laminated (in one continuous strip), 5 pieces of posterboard on which we tape our thumbnail notations of people, inventions, discoveries, accomplishments, leaders and wars. Some pictures are from Amy Pak, others are just googled images. The narrative for each is written by Fifi (or me, in the case of our 3-year backlog), and is color-coded according to what part it played in history. For example, world leaders and wars are orange, while specifically Christian history is on green.

In retrospect, I wish we had chosen another color all together for specifically American history, but there's no looking back now!

I remember having one of these in my classroom when I was younger. Excellent Visual! So handy to make your own!

Lovely idea!

I have to try this one in my classroom. I like the color coding for different aspects of history. I could even take seperate colors for womens, African American and Hispanic historical events. Perhaps one color for science advancements...hmm....you have me thinking!

I started an ancient history timeline on 8 1/2 X 11 paper for the kids. They each have their own and I usually type out the narrative and they draw pictures of the events. But for some reason it is slow going. It seems to take a lot of time to do it (maybe because we're trying to play catch up with our timeline)

Since we're in ancient civilizations we can add the color coding as we go! Thanks for the idea.
