Oh! Ha! Was It Saturday?

I didn't really get to notice. My morning started with that spin-around-in-circles, wondering-where-to-start feeling. It took a good few hours for me to find "traction"as Husband calls it, and actually get anything done. Well, anything real.

I think I've figured out why I gravitate toward blog jogging...or the e-mail box...or the refrigerator! All of these things can be completed -- beginning to end -- in just a couple of minutes. And I do need to feel that elusive sense of accomplishment for a job completed every now and then -- and I'll take it however I can get it!

In all seriousness, I'm having to really discipline myself to attempt the work that needs to be done but doesn't even stand a chance of actually getting done. Some jobs are just so big, so continuous, so tedious, so draining -- I sub-consciously avoid them for as long as I can. Because I do, do, do despise leaving things undone that I have begun!

First thing this morning, I skipped breakfast out with the family and a trip to a favorite specialty market because I thought better of starting the day with a breakfast taco or three and aisle after aisle of tempting "tasters." I probably made up for it though with mindless nibbling during the hours they were gone.

Husband came home telling me how delightful the girls were for him. They were "on their game" today, causing at least one older couple to stop and gush praise to their very happy Daddy. Yeah, he couldn't agree more. And such compliments are a good trade for the shock to his system that their energy level is every weekend. There is a lot of energy between the younger two especially -- who needs boys?

While they were out and the house rang with the effortlessly majestic tones of my favorite tenor, I managed to get most of the "hunting and gathering" I'd done recently for Thanksgiving decor, put away. The candles and foliage and table settings had been sitting in their original white plastic bags under my buffet for a couple of weeks -- first thing seen when one walks in the front door. Yuck!

Frankly, we're Texas minimalists. We don't feel the need to fill every. single. space. We've never been ones to decorate a table, but I'm a grown-up now and my Aunt has agreed to come for the holiday, so I splurged...and it looks great. Lord willing, we're also having a couple of "homeless" soldiers from a nearby Army base to dinner, and I think they're worth a little extra drama, for sure.

I think the only other thing that got my attention today was the all-consuming backlog of timeline notations for our history studies. After trying to keep notebook timelines and "Book of the Centuries" timelines, I finally decided that to really get anything meaningful out of our effort, the events being recorded needed pictures, narration and easy access -- in full view. Too bad I didn't decide this 6000 years ago -- in history curriculum, that is. 6000 years of history curriculum is about 4 academic years.

Over the summer, a 15-foot long, 2-foot high laminated timeline was born out of a continuous feed of white poster board. I use dry-erase pens to mark the years, Amy Pak figures or Googled pictures to make flip cards attached with clear packing tape, and on the underside, Fifi or I have written a short narration of the subject matter. As soon as the backlog is caught up, I hope to turn the project over, in its entirety, to her. Actually, no -- Fifi won't be Googling any pictures until she's a married adult. Or maybe not even then. You just never know what you're going to run into with the most innocent search.

As the day wound down, my very own Iron Chef, Husband took care of dinner, Fifi showered her sisters for church in the morning, and I kept doing the work of a 6th grader until my back hurt and I began to feel grumpy from being stuck in the same four walls most of the day. There are two loads of clothes and one more with bed sheets mocking me from the laundry room...but I think I'll just shut the door and let them all stew.

How did Scarlett use to say it? "Oh, I can't think about that right now. I'll worry about that tomorrow!"

I prefer, "Stick a fork in me -- I'm done!"

I can't wait until tomorrow.

Thank you dear Father, for the gift of the 7th Day! It will be my pleasure to resist the work and relish the rest I find in my Saviour.
