Bereft and Verklempt

Tomorrow is a big day for Fifi. It all came about rather suddenly, but it seems that tomorrow she will get braces. She's very excited. She wants to know what color of removable bands she ought to get: blue because it's nuetral? Pink because it's pretty? What about red for Christmas? How about red and green?!

As we drove away, she took apart the orthodontist's information package and spent a good amount of time reviewing the food and drink items that will be forbidden to her after tomorrow's appointment.

"Sodas? I can't have sodas when we go out to dinner?"

"No! Mwua ha ha ha!"

"Oh, Mommy....*mumbling to self* Gum, hard candy, pizza crust. Pizza crust?!"

"Yes, because it can be hard and might break off the brace from your tooth."

"Gumdrops, Tootsie Rolls, taffy, popcorn...*gasp* Ah! I'll be bereft of so many good things!"

Yes, that's what she said. Without any hesitation she incorporated "bereft" into her thought. And then I said, "Huh?" And I think I asked her to spell it...and to say it again...and then I called her father to tattle on her. He said to tell her to stop being smarter than us, but I don't think she can help it.

And then...

here is Fifi after her Math-U-See lesson this afternoon. She is casually asking her dog if she would do her the favor of eating her math book, and that made me laugh out loud! And it left me a little relieved that she is a 6th grader after all.

Ahh...braces and math...the trials of a sixth grade girl. But Fifi seems like a sweetheart from all I've read about her.
And smart, too! Bereft... I think I just learned that word a few years ago- like in my 30's...;)

This made me smile. My son also sometimes amazes me with his vocabulary, and if we had a dog, he would ask it to eat his Math-U-See as well (though he does most of the time enjoy it). He would, however, not be at all excited about braces:)

this made me giggle. I remember the days of braces... couldn't wait to get 'em... couldn't wait to get 'em off...

Blessings,
Karla

Smart girl! Mommy and Daddy needn't worry too much. She may have a bit of difficulty pronouncing words like "bereft" with braces on. ;o)
