Extra-Ordinary

"No distinction was made between the sacred and the everyday...their life was all one piece. It was all sacred
and all ordinary."

~ Sue Bender ~
author of Plain and Simple

I didn't think I had a way to express this truth. That's not to say for a second that it isn't completely true, but that rather it is so true that drawing the distinction without benefit of a clear contrast is quite a challenge.

This -- the happiest season of my life -- is built by laying the brick of the everday upon the brick of the everyday. There is always another load of laundry, another meal to prepare or tidy up after. There is the routine of awaken, read, listen, learn, practice, eat, play, nap, revel, swing, discover, share, groom and sleep.

But within the seemingly mundane, there is something sacred happening. There is growth. In the midst of what seems so common, God is giving increase: to their bodies and to their intellect.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man. Luke 2:52 KJV

I am beckoned to the back patio by my children. One, in particular, is anxious for me to see something. Her joy is palpable. I realize how rarely I allow myself the distraction of stepping out there when there is always another load of laundry, another meal to prepare or tidy up after. So I put one foot in front of the other and join her world, if only from the periphery.

And she begins to run. And her running takes the form of a gallop. And as she gallops multiple times in a large circle around the perimeter of our wide suburban yard, I see her discovering God's creation and delighting in His gift of imagination. I see her become a horse. I see this stallion running free among the tall, dew-covered grasses and fresh smell of a much-anticipated rain.

She is alive. I am alive. And I am very much aware that those truths are being held together by the Word of His Power. And that is sacred in my sight.

He is before all things, and in Him all things hold together. Collosians 1:17 NASB

I am blessed every time I read something you write! Whether it is here or in a comment on my blog. This is *no exception*! Beautiful!

Oh, and on Diurnal and the other one which I can't remember - I looked them up out of curiosity :) I'm odd that way!

A wonderful piece today - and something I *really* needed to hear!

In Christ alone,
Kari

I'm with you there--"in the happiest season of my life...laying the brick of the everyday upon brick of the everyday." I pray that I'm building well.

Thanks for sharing this brick in your life!

What an absolutely beautiful post. I am in the same season you are, and I can say with certainty, that, yes, it is my happiest season, but I don't always relish the ordinary. My two year old son is always SO excited, "Mommy! Look!" or "C'mere!" His excitement is usually contagious, but sometimes I view even that as a chore. So thanks for the reminder and the joy.

It is He who causes all things to grow.. and that indeed makes the ordinary sacred!

A truly exquisite post!
He ministered to me through your words!

Blessings,

So much understanding of the wonder of what God has given us comes with "step by step, joining her world..."

I'm enjoying the discussion today! Thank you for your touching insight.

one foot in front of the other... that is so hard to do, when there are "things" to do, isn't it?
Great post!
