What's That Word?

I'm looking for a word. It's on the tip of my tounge.

It's that thing that allows Christians to think that they need to be more clever than God's Word to rise to His charge. They view evangelism with a contest mentality; they must help God with His business plan, because it's just not bringin' in the numbers.

It's...it's...that word that tells them His instruction is antiquated and needs their help to be relevant in this day.

It's that mindset that drove the most beautiful angel in heaven to seek God's throne for himself.

Oh! It's right there! You know...it's that word that decides Paul was overstating the matter when he wrote about the qualifications of an overseer. And that he was being narrow-minded in the moment when he clearly instructed women about their divinely-appointed ministries and restrictions in the church. It's that word that describes why a woman can confidently say that God didn't mean it then...or at least doesn't mean it now... because afterall, He hadn't met her yet!

It's that word that let's us think He needs us. That word that helps us forget that, really, we're dust. A vapor. Helpless. Ignorant. Rebellious. It's that frame of mind that feeds a person's desire to be useful, but turns their appetite from moderation to gluttony.

It's what lets Christians decide what's worthy of their time and effort and pushes them to aspire toward their own conclusions.

That word...oh, that word! It feeds the belief that we're smarter and more spiritual than we are, and let's us forget to humble ourselves because we are too busy understanding everything perfectly. It sets up the buffet of God's Word and ways, and invites "Christians"to pick and choose what they like or what still applies in our age and culture -- take a little bit of this, but leave that part behind, thank you very much.

What's that word?

Pride. Or maybe Arrogance.
And we all fall victim to it.
Every one of us.

I love the new pic!

I'm with Sarah: Pride.

I think this is one of those subjects we'll have to agree to disagree on based on our mutual beliefs and understanding of the Word of God.

GOd bless you GB! I love your passion, I truly do!

I do know some gifted and wonderful women who are fantastic teachers, and God lead women and I know a woman vicar who fits all those catagories above. I guess I've not got a problem with gifted, and God lead women vicars. I work on the theory that I'd rather have a woman vicar who was walking 100% with God, rather than a man who was just doing the job.
I feel that if a man will not step up and do Gods work, then God has to bring women who are willing to do his plans into the role.
Many of the major teachers and role models I have had in my years as a christian were women, and one woman especially was the strongest person in God that I have ever met.
It is a shame that some men want to meet their own agendas rather than Gods.

"It is a shame that some men want to meet their own agendas rather than Gods."

It is a shame that some WOMEN want to meet their own agendas rather than Gods.

What would be really nice is if this issue wasn't so polarizing on the man/woman issue - but if it were really simply an open debate about Rebellion amongst ALL genders.

I agree with Sarah. Sin is sin, whether committed by men or women. They don't cancel each other out.

I'm aware that I did not make it clear that my point of view was from personal experience, not necessarily from "christian polatics". I have seen women work to bring what God wants to fruition simply because there was no one else to do it.
I think that there are some occasions where God does bring the best person in to do the job, no matter what their sex is.
But I must say I have a problem with women bishops, and feel that while vicars look after their flock, a bishops role is not right for a woman. This is huge debate for the Church of England at the moment.
Sorry if I've upset anyone.

Could the word be "emergent"?

Hmmm. What word? I'm not sure, but I believe it was first coined when Eve decided God must not have meant what He said about eating that fruit...

No. Sarah had it. It was "Pride" I was thinking of.

Christa...you say "emergent" as a bad thing, right? (I don't assume anything from anyone after a few months in the blogosphere.)

Yes, I meant "emergent" as a negative. I know what you mean about not assuming, I guess it's not always clear what fellow bloggers think on some of these things.
