This is our new kitchen window; below is our new arcadia door. The house is 28 years old, and the old fittings might have been original. The kitchen window was near impossible to clean, because it was double-fitted by previous owners; not double-paned, just double fitted -- as in one window installed on top of another. (Someday, with Husband's permission, I'll post about the first of two times we did attempt to clean the old window -- it's hillarious!) Anyway, the metal frame that the interior-most window slid across to reveal the screen was literally serrated by the time it was broken and taken down yesterday. It looked like a bread knife. To get it open, I had to lift it slightly while sliding to the left. No big deal except that it is roughly 70'' across, 40" high and over the kitchen sink. Good riddance.

The arcadia door necessitated a replacement when it ceased to lock. Every time we needed to go anywhere, One was in charge of getting down on hands and knees with a pair of pliers and bolting the door with a $5.00 double lock we bought at Home Depot. She's very happy about the new door. So am I! It is double-paned with micro-minis in between, which gives us a freedom from drapes or vertical blinds. Very clean. Best yet, the old one sounded a bit like a train rolling into the station every time it was opened or closed. This one just says, "swwwwwish." It's a wonderful sound.
